For the last few years World Bank is publishing its Doing Business report on laws rules, and taxes that regulate business around the globe. So far, Iraq has done poor performances as per those reports. Previously the country was regulated by the autocratic dictator Saddam Hussein. The socialist state-run economy of Iraq was not up to the mark to attract the investors within the country. (more…)

BAGHDAD, Sept 17 (KUNA) — Iraq seeks Kuwait’s support in extending and ameliorating its relationships with other countries, said Iraqi vice-president Khodair al-Khuzaei as he met in his office on Tuesday with Kuwaiti ambassador Ali al-Muemen.

Erbil, Asharq Al-Awsat—The Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament welcomed Iraq’s exit from its obligations under Chapter VII of the UN Charter after the UN Security Council unanimously agreed to resolution 2017 on Thursday.

Speaking exclusively to Asharq Al-Awsat Tariq Jawhar Sarmami, senior media adviser to the speaker of the Kurdistan parliament, said: “We welcome the UN Security Council’s decision which will end a long period of Iraq being subject to international sanctions and [obligations of] Chapter VII of the UN Charter.” (more…)

Sanctions were imposed on Iraq after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in the 1990’s. The embargo on Iraq falls under Chapter VII of the U.N. charter.

The Chapter VII of the UN Charter authorizes the Security Council to use force to enforce the decisions either through sanctions or military intervention; while urging Section VI states to resolve their differences through peaceful means, it is expected that the UN Security Council to consider the adoption of the draft resolution in this regard on June 27 of this month.
