Ban announces intention to appoint German diplomat as his envoy for Iraq

5 August 2011 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced his intention to appoint Martin Kobler of Germany as his Special Representative for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission to the country (UNAMI).

Mr. Kobler will replace Ad Melkert of the Netherlands, who has served as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq since July 2009.

Kuwait will not build 60 piers in Mobarak port, newspaper

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Kuwaiti Qabas Daily reported today, quoting high diplomatic sources, that Kuwait will not build 60 piers in Mobarak Port.

The paper pointed out that the Iraqi technical delegation, due to arrive in Kuwait in the coming few days, will be acquainted with the three facts of the port.

“These facts will pacify the Iraqi side noting that Kuwait will not complete the fourth stage of the port, which includes building 60 piers.

There will be no environmental impact during the three stages on marine life, and will not affect any changes in the sea in Iraqi territorial waters,” the paper added.

Vietnam to Avoid Dong Surplus , Binh Says on Vietnam Television

VietFinanceNews.com – Vietnam aims to encourage greater domestic use of the dong rather than the dollar and avoid a surplus of local currency, State Bank of Vietnam Governor Nguyen Van Binh said in an interview on Vietnam Television today.

The bank will set interest rates for the dong and the dollar at a reasonable level to ensure sufficient supply and prevent speculation, Binh said in the interview.

With these measures, the dong’s exchange rate to the dollar should stay stable until year-end, Binh told Vietnam Television.

ECA: Investment Law amendments need to Iraqi banks and banking offices like
The Economic Commission of the Council of Representatives, Thursday, that the investment law needs some modifications in line with the nature of the direction the economy in Iraq, and affirming that the bank guarantees one of the problems that stand in the face of foreign investment in the country, and described the Iraqi banks as more like the offices of banking.

The head of the Economic Commission parliamentary Ahmed al-Alwani in an interview for “Alsumaria News”, that “in 2009 was amended Investment Law No. 13 of 2006, but still need some adjustments,” noting that “the amendments must be consistent with the economic system, free Iraqi “.

Baghdad (news) .. criticized the economic expert, contrary goldsmith inability of Iraqi banks to attract investors, pointing to the existence of a clear failure to keep up banking operations in the modern world.

The jeweler (economist) said (to the Agency news) today: that the Iraqi banks are unable to attract foreign investors to work on the development of this sector to the lack of sufficient capital for the advancement, confirming the existence of backwardness and clearly in Iraqi banks to keep pace with progress in the world.

He added that the private banking sector in Iraq is restricted to laws and regulations of the Central Bank in the nature of the work of banks, in addition to government regulations, which provided not to deal with private banks, which led to obstruction of their work.

In a statement issued by the presidency office, President Talabani pointed out the positive and productive results reached by the Iraqi politicians on the real national partnership, and the consensus on the need to train and arm Iraqi forces in cooperation with USA.
